The LeTV LeEco Le 2 Max is the successor to 2015’s popular Flagship. And now it is even bigger sporting a 5.7 inch Display, it is a Phablet with monstrous specs. Speaking of specs, the Le 2 Max sports a Top tier Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 Chipset along with the Adreno 530 chipset for optimal gaming capabilities. 2016 reviewer’s often call it “The Real Flagship Killer”. Top tier hardware on a very affordable price point.
Premium Build Quality
Just like its predecessor, LeTV has adopted similar design and ergonomics. The build quality is top notch and worthy of the Flagship moniker. You can get it on multiple color selections, Rose Gold, Silver and Gray. At front , you have the 8.0 megapixel camera with the LED notification lights adjacent, which the color can be changed depending on preference. At the bottom is the capacitive navigation controls which is LED back lit but the colors are a bit faded to clearly see on direct sunlight.
At the rear is the 21 megapixel camera with the Dual tone LED Flash and below that is the Ultrasonic Fingerprint ID Scanner. The speaker grills facing down, which can be easily muffled. At the top is the IR Infrared Remote Sensor.
USB Type C based Audio (No more 3.5mm Headphone jack)
Shunning away from the standard 3.5mm Audio Port, the feature is called CDLA(Continuous Digital Lossless Audio) Technology, which promises better audio output and no static or interference. This makes use an adapter for the USB Type C and plus directly to your Headphone.
Speaking of Audio Quality, the best experience is when using headphones, the Loudspeakers are loud enough and Audio Quality is relatively good. The range is also satisfactory and the sound doesn’t distort.
Excellent Gaming and Multitasking Capabilities
The Top tier Snapdragon 820 at its innards makes the LeTV Le 2 Max a very powerful Smartphone. It is also currently one of the fastest Phablets available. The power and gaming potential make it a great contender against other more expensive brands in the market. The 4 GB LPDDR4 RAM is enough for the serious power user and the 32 GB UFS 2.0 (Universal Flash Storage). A bit different from the traditional eMMC, UFS is faster both read and write speeds. Sadly, there is no support for Expandable storage via MicroSD.
Brilliant 2K Display but…
The 2K display is simply magnificent, the colors are not just accurate but also very vivid, you can clearly see the pixels of the texts and images. It is one of the best available, the sensitivity is also satisfactory. Here is the “but” part, we all know battery life is affected by the display, and this is true with the LeEco Le 2 Max, the 2K display is power hungry and even with the 3100mAh underneath, it is clearly not enough. Don’t expect to use this the whole day without charging. I suggest lowering the brightness to the bare acceptable levels if you are just using it sparingly.
EUI 5.6 (Android 6.0 Marshmallow)
LeEco has outfitted most of their 2016 releases with the 5.6 version, although this june, the 5.8 version will be available for update. The User Interface experience is very much similar to MIUI, you have plenty of customization options, most in particular in the Notification Window. Almost all functions can be accessed on the Notification window. Also User Experience is overall very smooth with little to no hitches and lags.
4G LTE or VoLTE Connectivity
The handset readily supports multiple band frequencies, but most of which are focused on China. Although international bands are also available but are limited. You should check with your carrier first for proper support especially on 4G LTE. It supports Dual SIM with Dual Standby functionality and 4G LTE speeds can go as high as 300Mbps.
Other connectivity options such as Bluetooth 4.2, Dual Band WiFi Support and USB Type C are available. MHL and Wireless Display are also supported
Other notable features present:
Ultrasonic Fingerprint ID Recognition. So far, the recognition and speed is fast, no issues on recognition, the Fingerprint Scanner works very well with no issues as present.
IR Remote Control Function. With a third party app, you can control appliances available just as easily.
Great 4K capable camera
The camera specs are impressive and the results also supports that claim. It is equipped with a 21 megapixel Camera with a Sony IMX230 BSI CMOS sensor. On good lighting, the details are great and image quality are actually very good. It focuses quickly with no lags on captures and the automatic focus is also very responsive. Colors are accurate and there is no oversaturation, you do have plenty of shooting modes to choose from, and the Camera UI is relatively easy to navigate.
On less light, the quality dips and noise levels go up, but the image quality is still acceptable. You do have the Dual Tone LED Flash available and certainly helps in this situation.
Speaking off recording, the camera can capture 4K videos at 30 fps, 1080p at 60 fps and 720p at slow motion 120 fps. The video can be a bit jittery at first but the OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) functions well. The video quality is good but not really comparable to the still shots.
A bit frugal battery life
The 3100mAh underneath isn’t monstrous especially paired with a power hungry 2K display and powerful Chipset. On light to moderate usage, especially with the display reduced to a minimum, you can get through the whole day without any issues. But more intense usage like Web Surfing and Watching movies, the battery usage dips. On performance mode, you can around 4 hours of continuous usage, which isn’t much but quite expected. But the good thing, is that it supports Quick Charging.
A very powerful Flagship but frugal battery
No question, the LeTV Le 2 Max is a beast, the specs speaks for itself. But sadly the 3100mAh battery isn’t really a great combination, especially paired with the 2K display and Snapdragon 820. Although there had been leap and bounds in terms of improvement in battery efficiency. It’s still short. This is probably the biggest gripe on an already perfect Flagship. Also there is no Expandable Storage support.
